Dental restorations have been revolutionized with CEREC in Sunnyvale, or the chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics. In the past, crowns, onlays, inlays, and veneers required multiple procedures with at least two weeks of waiting in between. But now, your Sunnyvale dentist can create your new restoration within a matter of minutes, all from the comfort of our office.
CEREC uses computer-assisted design tools with an in-office milling machine to create customized, natural-looking restorations in a single dental appointment. Here’s a breakdown of the three major components that CEREC utilizes:
Most patients who need a ceramic restorative treatment — like a crown, veneer, inlay, or onlay — can benefit from the efficiency of CEREC technology. However, people who have a history of breaking ceramic restorations or patients who have a deep bite may require an alternative approach. To find out whether you can benefit from CEREC technology, schedule a consultation with us. Some of the advantages that patients can gain from CEREC restorations include:
CEREC uses CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacture) technology that allows us to craft our own custom crowns, inlays, onlays, and veneers while you wait. The machine uses our precise specifications to craft a beautiful restoration from a block of dental porcelain. Within a matter of minutes, you’ll have your new restoration without even having to get a bad-tasting or gag-inducing impression.
First, your dentist will prepare the affected tooth, removing decay and shaping the tooth to be wider at the base. Then we’ll take digital impressions which will be transferred to a computer screen. With the image, your dentist will design your new restoration to your specific measurements. The completed design is transmitted to the milling unit, which we will have prepared with a block of porcelain that matches your tooth enamel precisely. It only takes the milling machine about 15 minutes to craft your new restoration, and it will be stronger than what we typically get from a dental lab.
Before final placement, we will ensure the restoration fits just like it should. Then, we’ll polish and affix it to the prepared tooth. And that’s it — your new smile is ready, no follow-up appointments are needed!
